In the Theatre

Racing Demon by David Hare.  Wokingham Theatre 2014

Designing, both sets and lighting, and Directing are time-consuming.  Directing involves a lot of detailed contact with a large team – not just the cast but all the back-stage and technical crew and many others such as those producing the publcity and programmes. Design, both sets and lighting, involves plenty of consultation and communication but the execution often has to be completed when others are not around.  The work of set painting and dressing is best completed when it is quiet and it is possible to concentrate on the detail.  Much of the lighting task needs to be done in a dark theatre when one can focus lights accurately and begin to see the effects created by the combination of lanterns and gel colours that one has rigged.  So both the set designer and the lighting designer need dedicated time for their roles – and since the set designer needs light to work and the Lighting designer needs darkness…..!
